At the start of your running journey, it might seem like all you need is a pair of sneakers. And while that’s technically true, there’s a whole lot more that goes into the experience of becoming a runner. From gear to gadgets, you can be walking away with quite the whole in your pocket after visiting your local running store.

With the world becoming more sustainable and economically conscious, there’s no reason why running can’t be budget friendly! We’ve put together our favorite tips on how to make your new (or old) found love of running more cost-effective!

The Cost of Running Gear

Do you need the latest and greatest gear to start running? Definitely not. But the reality is, getting into running—especially long-distance running—can come with a hefty price tag. Investing in a good pair of running shoes catered toward your specific needs can cost upwards of $150 and that’s just the beginning. Add in GPS navigators, hydration gear and other running gear – the “cheap” sport can turn not very budget friendly fast.

For a runner starting from the beginning – your initial setup could easily range from $250 – $800 depending on what you choose to invest in. For long distance runners, that cost can easily skyrocket – which is why it’s important to look for more budget friendly options.

The Rise of the Budget Friendly Runner

With sustainability and the rising cost of gear at the top of runner’s minds, embracing secondhand finds and budget friendly swaps is ideal. Ditch the narrative of what it means to wear second-hand. Instead of having a negative connotation towards “second-hand’ think of it as you’re saving money AND directly benefitting the environment. The truth is you don’t need expensive gear to reach your running goals – just dedication and willingness to show up for yourself every day.

Being a budget friendly runner doesn’t just mean being eco-conscious – it’s also about making sustainable choices as well. Choosing gear that is of good quality ensures that it will last and you’ll get more bang out of your buck compared to something cheaper that needs to be constantly replaced.

Where to Find Budget Friendly Gear

Finding budget friendly gear isn’t as hard as you may think! Looking online for resources is a great move. Facebook marketplace and online consignment stores such as “Play It Again Sports” has great options for gently worn gear. You can find running apparel, GPS watches, and accessories in great condition for a fraction of a price at stores like this. Checkout your local running groups on Facebook as well! Some runners may need to be cleaning out their closet and offer some great deals.

Another great resource for budget-friendly sneakers is “Relay Goods”.  This online store has “pre-owned performance” sneakers with reduced prices. Although they’re considered “pre-owned” most of the sneakers on their site have been barely used.

Bonus tip: check out local marathon expos in your area. Some vendors at these events have heavily discounted prices on their gear and apparel. Being budget friendly isn’t hard – you just need to be creative and find easy hacks!

What’s Worth Buying New?

Okay – some things you can get away with buying gently worn or used. Items such as running shorts, moisture-wicking apparel, jackets etc. are okay to buy used as you can clean those easily and they typically hold up well. Secondhand hydration packs, sunglasses, and even GPS watches can be easily maintained.

When it comes to items such as your running shoes, sports bras, socks, and even underwear – that’s where you need to be cautious. Undergarments tend to be harder to sanitize. Refer back to online resources for secondhand running shoes that are still in great condition and can be re-worn.

A More Budget Friendly Sustainable Way to Run

So, there you have it! Running doesn’t need to come with a hefty price tag. There are so many budget-friendly options and hacks that makes running accessible for everyone. Basically, being budget-friendly is a WIN-WIN. Not only are you saving money – you’re also helping reduce your personal carbon footprint by going the second-hand route.

Always remember – running doesn’t need to be expensive. What it really comes down to is your commitment to getting your miles in and always showing up for you. Don’t let outside voices make you feel like you need all the latest greatest gear. You just need to go outside and run!
