I’m sure all runners are looking forward to this season’s cool weather, scenic routes, and a calendar full of fun fall races. In this blog, we’re getting into exactly why fall is the best running season and the perks of running in fall races!

Perfect Running Weather

The heat and humidity this past summer were BRUTAL! One thing to look forward to this running season is the crisp, cooler air. Runners look forward to this time of year because of the benefits that come with the drop in temperature.

Higher temperatures can run the risk of causing overheating on long (even short) runs. Running in cooler temperatures is less taxing on the body, as your body doesn’t need to work as hard to cool down. This allows runners to keep a steady pace during longer distances due to the ability to breathe easier.

Due to cooler temperatures with less humidity, the need to hydrate is also less prominent.

Scenic Running Season

Who wouldn’t want to lace up their sneakers and head out for a run to see leaves finally changing colors and get to watch them slowly fall to the ground? Experiencing the fall running season with your own two eyes is unmatched! The crisp, cool air and the rustling of vibrant leaves make your runs exciting and something to look forward to.

For those in the middle of a training block, the beauty of the fall running season can elevate normal routes to feeling new and fresh. All of us runners know that, sometimes, during a hard training season, getting mental clarity can be a game-changer. What’s more mentally clearing than experiencing nature at our season’s finest?

Another plus? Getting outside and experiencing nature when the temperature starts dropping can help alleviate symptoms of  Seasonal Affective Disorder!

Fall Running Season Events

Alright… where are all our turkey trot people?! Who doesn’t want to wake up at 6 am Thanksgiving morning to run a 5K? All jokes aside… the fall running season has a jam-packed calendar season filled with local 5Ks, marathons, and charity races.

With October being breast cancer month, run events are held across the nation to help support this worthy cause. Popular World Major Marathons: the Chicago Marathon and New York City are held during the fall running season. The cooler weather supports runners attempting to PR or even run their first marathon!

The Marine Corps Marathon also occurs during the fall running season. What’s so special about this race? Not only are they referred to as the “People’s Marathon”, they also collect runners’ gently used sneakers, to promote sustainability at their race and in their community!

Seasonal Nutritional Perks

It’s no secret that runners love food… who can blame them? Everyone knows that fueling your body is essential for performance and recovery. The good thing about the fall running season is all the nutritional foods that are in season!

Fresh apples provide a quick energy boost and hydration due to their water content. Complex carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes and winter squash, help runners sustain longer runs. The “star of the season” pumpkins are rich in antioxidants that help promote muscle recovery and overall immune health.

Beyond the nutritional value, these foods also come with the cozy flavors and traditions of the fall running season! There are so many nourishing recipes that incorporate these foods and flavors.

At the end of the day, the fall running season brings all runners together into one fun-filled season. From more comfortable weather, beautiful scenery, community events, to yummy nutritional foods – running in the fall is the best! So, get your sneakers on, hit your favorite route, and make the most of the season that was made for running!
