In the running world, every step counts. Not just in miles but in the overall impact we as runners are making. Beyond the joy of crossing the finish line and reaching a new personal record, every step we take has an impact on the environment. That’s why this year we need to make sustainability more of a priority than ever before. Let’s get into exactly how the running community can incorporate sustainable methods in 2024.

Community Engagement

Get your running club involved in the action! The next time your running club gets together, try plogging. You’re killing two birds in one stone by incorporating this sustainable method during your jogs. Not only are you getting your miles in, you’re also directly benefiting the planet at the same time. (You can even do this on your runs by yourself). You’ll feel good knowing that you’re making a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, greener planet.

Sustainable Methods in Running Gear

The production of traditional running gear made from synthetic materials, contributes to carbon emissions being released within the environment. By buying products made from recycled materials or organic fibers, you’re reducing your carbon footprint. What’s good about this is that many clothing brands are one step ahead of us and take their sustainability methods to the next level! Believe it or not… The choice of something so small as what brand of workout shirt to buy next really does make a difference!

Eco-Friendly Race Events

There are so many opportunities to incorporate more sustainable methods within race planning and execution. Race organizers can prioritize the use of sustainable materials for race bibs, medals, and promotional items. Opting for recyclable or biodegradable options is the best way to go. Implementing different recycling and composting stations throughout the event can help decrease the amount of waste being scattered around. Race directors can take it a step further by having all registration forms and communication moved to purely digital.

Sustainable Methods in Partnerships

Whether you’re a running store, gym owner, or running club coach you can incorporate sustainable methods within your partnerships. Go into the new year with a commitment to start repurposing your used running shoes. Over 300 million pairs of sneakers are thrown away each year. Instead of adding your pair of sneakers to landfills, repurpose them instead. By partnering with a Sneaker Recycling Program you’re helping reduce carbon emissions by 30 pounds for each pair!

Reduce Your Own Personal Carbon Footprint

Start paying attention to what you’re doing as an individual. How many gel packets are you throwing away after your runs? Do you really need another race shirt that you’re never going to wear again? Are you checking what materials the running gear you’re buying is made from? Can you run to get your coffee instead of driving? By making mindful choices and incorporating sustainable methods into everyday life, you’re reducing your own personal carbon footprint, then inspiring others to do the same!

Ready to leap into sustainability in this new year? Here are some more awesome tips:

  • Swap out the plastic! Use reusable water bottles and containers any chance you can.
  • Start carpooling to your run club and events to limit carbon emissions.
  • Quality over quantity. Buy higher quality workout gear made with sustainable materials.
  • Shop locally. Reduce your environmental impact and help support your community.
  • Try doing a virtual race. That way you’re limiting travel to physical events.
  • Educate your community! Share the ways your club and community can incorporate sustainable methods into their everyday life.

There you have it! Embracing sustainable methods into the running community nurtures a healthier environment, helps promote community, and a more enjoyable running experience. It’s not difficult to make more sustainable choices. We just need to be more mindful of the choices we make, and the carbon footprint that we’re making. Let’s work together towards a greener, more sustainable future!
