When people search for “jobs sustainability” because they’re looking for opportunities as energy engineers, scientists, or corporate executives, they don’t realize that jobs sustainability can begin in faraway markets, towns, and small micro-enterprise spaces.

For many people, selling shoes and sneakers is a way to earn a sustainable income in a place with very limited, if any, job opportunities. It can mean food on the table, educating children, and staying out of gangs or illegal activities to survive.

A dear friend and photographer we know took pictures in Haiti of micro-entrepreneurs who sell the sneaker reuse collections we ship overseas by our team at Sneakers4Good. Meet one of our partners before we dig deeper into jobs sustainability.

Yrosse: Reuse as Economic Stability

Yrosse is a mom who sells shoes and sneakers after losing her husband in 2024. Twice a month, she purchases inventory, and she resells several pairs each day. She earns enough to care for her children and grandchildren.

Her dreams for the future are simple. She wants more inventory to help her grow the business and provide more economic stability for her family in Haiti. Her story illustrates how the reuse economy can turn gently worn sneakers into a reliable source of income.

What Does Jobs Sustainability Mean for Sneakers4Good?

Sustainability jobs protect the environment and provide economic opportunity. In North America, we face challenges, but we also have jobs and opportunities that simply don’t exist in developing nations due to systemic poverty.

In many countries worldwide, there are few, if any, jobs, and the few that exist may be given to those with government connections. That’s why many of our 4,000 micro-enterprise partners sell shoes and sneakers in their communities.

Unlike sneaker recycling, which breaks down materials into their raw materials, our team aims to extend the life of sneakers through the reuse economy. We’re all about providing economic opportunity and a hand-up to people who might not otherwise get a chance.

Every time you partner with us, this is what happens:

  • You reduce landfill waste
  • Help lower carbon emissions
  • Extend the product value of sneakers
  • Give a hand-up to families worldwide

Micro Stories: The True Engine of the Reuse Economy

It’s easy to focus on policies, politics, or systems when talking about sustainability. But we like to bring it down to the human level.

Joanna: Rebuilding Through Entrepreneurship

Joanna sells sneakers in Haiti after her husband died during the 2010 earthquake. To provide for her three children, she turned to selling gently worn shoes and sneakers. She works long hours, but dreams of having a store, and she’s been able to survive and thrive.

Paolo: A New Generation of Sustainability Entrepreneurs

It doesn’t matter if you’re in New York City or Haiti. The chances are you know that social media can help promote your business. Paolo runs his shoe business in Haiti through Instagram. He sources products regionally and sells them to customers digitally and online.

Christopher: Another Generation of Entrepreneur

Like Paolo, Christopher operates “Firecamp Shoes” through WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. He sells shoes and sneakers online and also coordinates with cross-border partners, including our team.

James: From Teenager to Provider

James started selling footwear as a teenager. Flash forward to today, and he’s still doing it, but now he’s even more motivated to support his child through his work. Every day, he chooses to sell sneakers and shoes to avoid the violence of gangs.

Across these stories, you’re seeing how jobs sustainability goes beyond waste reduction to include:

  • Crime prevention
  • Economic dignity
  • Family resilience
  • Community stability

Sneakers4Good and the Global Reuse Economy

Sneakers4Good participates at the beginning of this sustainability chain, as our founder, Wayne Elsey, has written about in a book about the reuse economy. The brands he’s created support environmental stewardship and economic empowerment.

He often reminds our team that if one of our global partners doesn’t sell sneakers that day, they don’t eat. He also reminds us that the number one thing they’re always asking of Wayne and his brands is inventory.

Recycling relies on industrial processes that break things down and expend more energy. Reuse relies on people. These micro-stories represent a global market and workforce founded on circular thinking and on extending the lifespan of what we already manufactured.

As you read this, consider this an invitation to do something good for the environment and for jobs sustainability for people worldwide who need the sneakers on your feet to earn a living. In short, Sneakers4Good is about sustainability and people, and that’s profoundly human.
