It’s safe to say that in recent months, you’ve opened one of your favorite social media platforms and came across someone training for a half marathon. Social media has transformed the running community into a vibrant, supportive community. It encourages at least one person to try it out. As a result, social media campaigns are a great asset for runners, teams, and groups.

What seems like a newfound interest for some, has helped create an online space for runners. They come from anywhere across the nation to connect and share their love for this sport. Between sharing your latest run on Strava or congratulating a fellow runner in your Facebook group, there’s so many ways social media connects runners. So, in this blog, we’ll get into exactly what social media has to offer to the running community!

Connecting Like-Minded Individuals

The beauty of the running world is how engrained individual runners are in each other’s success. Luckily, social media connects runners so easily with all the platforms out there. The number one platform for most is Strava. As a standout in the running world, it allows its 120 million users to track their runs, evaluate their performance, and give friendly encouragement. Runners are even able to use Strava to locate running trails and groups in their area.

Runners can use Instagram as a sort of “visual diary”. By posting photos and videos of their runs/training sessions, they’re opening the door for words of encouragement and props from their running friends. Coaches will post helpful tips and inspiration for your next run. With hashtags like #runhappy or #runnersofinstagram, a whole community from across the world can come together as one.

Facebook can offer a more versatile approach for runners as it’s filled with groups, pages, and running events. Running groups on Facebook can range from global communities to local run clubs, where members are encouraged to share advice and support each other’s success. This platform also is a great way to promote an upcoming race to its members. With groups centered towards new-bee’s, ultra-runners, or trail runners there’s a place for everyone.

Together, these platforms and social media campaigns connect runners from across the world, allowing them to show their love for running.

Motivation through Social Media

With social media being such a dominant force in our world, we might as well tap in how we can harness its power for positive impact. One thing about the running community is that we want to talk about our runs! By posting on different social media platforms and tapping into a motivating environment, progress is celebrated and supported. Although sharing on social media can be overwhelming at times, there’s nothing better than having people you don’t even know cheering you on.

TikTok users have recently jumped on the wave, as a diverse platform to motivate others and connect to a larger audience. Through short yet engaging videos, runners on TikTok showcase their running routines, race experience, and daily tips. The platform’s algorithm helps these videos reach outside of their typical niche, inspiring others to try it out. Runners use this social media platform to share motivational strategies, often adding a personal touch and sense of humor to it.

Social media has created a space where runners of all levels can find inspiration, support, and a sense of belonging.

Promoting Races through Social Media

Another way social media has helped transform the running community? Through promoting events and getting runners amped up! Social media campaigns have made it easier than ever for race organizers to reach and engage participants. Utilizing different platforms to create dedicated groups and pages, has allowed race directors to share details about the upcoming race and registration information. With real time communication with potential participants, these platforms can create excitement and anticipation for the upcoming race. There’s no better feeling than hopping on Instagram and seeing a countdown for the race you’re about to run!

Additionally creating hashtags and seeing other runners posting about the race builds a sense of community and keeps the momentum going long after the race is over. Runners are still posting about running The Boston Marathon, even though it happened months ago!

As social media continues to shape the running world, it’s clear its impact can go further than just likes and follows. It has turned into a safe space where runners worldwide can share their experiences, find support and inspiration. The role of social media in the running world will continue to grow and make this sport more inclusive, engaging and rewarding for everyone involved!
